Waterford Speedbowl 5/12 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Results
Waterford, CT (May 12, 2012) Racing returned to Waterford Speedbowl Saturday night with a special 60th anniversary event for the Northeastern Midget Association plus NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing. The Northeastern Midget Association (NEMA) is one of the nations oldest racing series, with roots at Waterford going back to its beginning. Greg Stoehr of Bridgewater, MA took home the prestigious win in the nights NEMA Midget feature while Brandon Igo of Bondsville, MA won the companion NEMA Lite race. In Saturday night NASCAR action, Ledyard native Tyler Chadwick took the checkered flag in the SK Modified® feature, his second on the year, while defending Bob Valenti Auto Mall Late Model champion Jeff Smith of Old Lyme returned to the winners circle for the first time in 2012. Chris Meyer of North Franklin became the first repeat winner of the season in the Street Stocks and Ken Cassidy Jr. of Lisbon won again in the Mini Stocks, giving him six on the year.
Joe Perry raced into the lead when the green flag was shown to the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series SK Modified® field for their 35-lap feature. He led over Joe Gada, Al Stone and Ed Puleo over the opening circuits. Hard racing further back among Chadwick, Jeff Rocco, Rob Janovic Jr., Kyle James and others showcased plenty of side-by-side action. Just behind them, trouble broke out on lap-4 off turn four to bring out the caution flag. Several cars made contact sending Diego Monahans car hard into the frontstretch wall. Frank Mucciacciaro and Rich Brooks also got a piece of the wall, and James and Craig Lutz went spinning into the infield. When the dust settled Mucciacciaro and Monahans nights were done.
Perry picked up where he left off when racing went back to green, leading Gada. Stone secured third and Nichole Morgillo was up to fourth, just ahead of Chadwick. Ed Puleo and Jeff Pearl slid back in the outside lane to the back of the top ten as Janovic, Justin Gaydosh and Tom Abele Jr. raced forward.
Once the field singled out, racing stayed clean throughout the field as several laps clicked off the scoreboard. Gada glued himself to Perrys back bumper searching for an opening on the leader. Chadwick picked up pursuit of fourth position, beginning to look outside of Morgillo for the spot. He made his move to the outside of Morgillo on lap-13, completing the pass a lap later. Just one lap after that on lap-15, Chadwick was by Stone into third. He sliced the gap to Perry and Gada, arriving at Gadas back bumper by lap-17.
Gada turned up the heat on Perry, still looking for an opening on the low side. Meanwhile, Chadwick saw opportunity to get to Gadas outside and jumped on it. By lap-19 he had swapped positions with Gada, who was back to third. Before the field made it around to complete lap-20, Abele spun in turn two collecting Pearl and Puleo to bring out the second and final caution flag of the race. Puleo was done for the night, while Pearl pitted for repairs and rejoined at the tail of the field.
Perry had to contend with Chadwick for the restart. Although Perry got a good jump down the front chute, Chadwick sailed into turn one on the outside, flexed his muscle in the outside lane and snatched the lead away down the backstretch to lead lap-20. Once clear of Perry, Chadwick steamed ahead to a strong lead. Morgillo picked up a spot on the restart as well, clearing Gada to move to third. James was back up to fifth but he had to fight off Gaydosh and Janovic, who were breathing down his neck. Gaydosh and Janovic continued a battle for sixth, giving James room to finally work on Gada.
Morgillo finally found a way to Perrys inside into turn one on lap-29, taking the spot. Gada tried to follow suit but Perry shut the door on his bid. The field ran the final laps off in rapid fire with Chadwick picking up the win going away. Morgillo scored her best career finish with second. James rallied from his early race spin to drive back up to an impressive third place at the checkered flag, getting around the outside of Gada and Perry in the closing two laps. Perry faded to fourth, while Gada ran with the leaders all night and took fifth.
In the 30-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Bob Valenti Auto Mall Late Model race, defending track champion Jeff Smith used an outside front row starting position to take the race lead on lap-1. Rich Staskowski took second spot with Anthony Flannery moving to third. Not long after, Dillon Moltz and Bruce Thomas Jr. moved to fourth and fifth position. The top-five raced single file and logged laps feeling out their cars over the first half of the race, which ran clean and green. Smith pulled out to a few length lead over Staskowski when the first caution flag finally waved on lap-20 as Jason Palmers car lost power and slowed to a halt on the speedway.
Staskowski lined up outside Smith for the restart. The Speedbowl outside groove was in effect for the Late Model feature, as Staskowski then used the lane to get by Smith on lap-22. Staskowski led until Thomas went spinning from the top-five down the back chute, returning the race to caution.
On the next restart, Staskowski got a good jump but Smith was back in the outside lane and he used that to drive back alongside Staskowski. Smith edged back into the lead on lap-25, pulling ahead of Staskowski. Moltz ran in third behind them, sizing up Staskowski before pulling inside of him to take second on lap-28. A three car spin involving Flannery, Gertsch and Brian Andronaco Jr. in turn one on lap-29 drew the final caution flag.
Smith had Moltz to his outside for the restart. Once again the outside of the track proved as the place to be as Moltz got momentum to the outside of Smith. Smith ran hard to his inside, trying to take away the advantage of the outside lane. Moltz came around to lead the white flag lap by a nose, setting up a side-by-side battle for the win on the final lap.
The two ran through turns one and two with Moltz still holding a slight edge as they hit the backstretch. Through turns three and four, Smith and Moltz made contact going up the hill off turn four in a drag race to the checkered flag. Smith was able to wrestle away the win in another exciting finish for the division. Moltz came away with second with Staskowski third, Thomas coming back from his spin for fourth and Vin Esposito fifth.
The 25-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Street Stock began with past champion Norm Root taking the race lead for an opening green-flag run that endured over the first half of the race. Root scooted away to a five length lead ahead of a battle for second among several drivers, including Bill McNeil, Dan Darnstaedt and Chris Meyer.
Meyer worked his way by each to take second over from McNeil on lap-9 and closed the gap on Roots lead. Meyer flexed his muscle getting to Roots inside on lap-11, pulling even through turns three and four before crossing the stripe as the new race leader. Meyers timing was key as one lap later Mike Caprio suffered mechanical failure, dropping fluid onto the track. Greg Moran Jr. got caught up in the liquid sending him spiraling into the turn four wall to bring out the lone caution flag of the race on lap-13.
Meyer lined up for the restart in the lead and quickly got away from Root. He pulled out to a several car advantage over the pack, which continued to battle tooth and nail for position. Darnstaedt took over second on lap-17, dropping Root to third. Behind them, McNeil had his hands full holding off former champions Ted Dupre and Corey Hutchings. Hutchings was patiently working his way up through the field, steadily rising to fifth spot on lap-20.
Out front, Meyer cruised to an impressive victory. He won easily over Darnstaedt, who was alone in second at the checkered flag. Root finished in third with Hutchings nipping McNeil for fourth at the stripe.
Charles Canfield took the lead on the opening lap of the 25-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Mini Stock feature ahead of pole-sitter Chris Garside. Canfield and Garside occupied the top two spots over the first seven laps which ran without incident. Exiting turn two of lap-8 however, caution waved for a multiple car accident just outside the top-five. Chris Ivory, Jeff Cembruch, Wayne Burroughs and Dale Sherman were among those collected.
The restart had Canfield resume his lead to turn one. Bill Leonard and Ken Cassidy steered through the wreckage on lap-8 to become contenders after the restart, moving up to the second and third positions. The next move came from Cassidy, who got to Leonards outside on lap-12 to take second. Cassidy moved up to Canfields bumper, again going outside to pull even with and take over the race lead on lap-14. Leonard was looking to follow Cassidy around the top of Canfield when the second caution came out on lap-16 for a three car spin off the front chute.
Cassidy never looked back once in the lead. He had to survive three more caution periods as the Mini Stocks kept the action wild including two more multi-car incidents. Ian Brew survived the night to finish in second while Cembruch came back with damage to take third. Garrett Denton and Burroughs also overcame adversity to finish top-five runs in the fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
In the nights NEMA Midget action, Stoehr took home the Marvin Rifchin Trophy in the 30-lap feature race. It was Stoehrs 11th career victory in the series, which celebrated its 60th anniversary season at the Speedbowl.
Igo was a first time winner in Lites action, leading throughout the 30-lap feature. He had to work lapped traffic and survive a bid by Carl Medeiros to prevail to his win.
Next Saturday night the Speedbowl hosts Little League Night with all youth in their Little League jersey admitted free. Ten will be selected to participate in a Home Run Derby on the frontstretch paired with Speedbowl drivers before the nights racing, presented by Sids Vault. A six division NASCAR Whelen All-American Series race program including the Legends Cars and Bandoleros hits the track, with main events beginning 7:00pm. The Home Run Derby follows qualifying, at approximately 6:30pm. More details can be found at Speedbowl.com.
