First off, I'd like to say, MY GOD WAS IT HOT OUT. LIKE EXCRUCIATINGLY HOT OUT.
Only one issue stemmed from practice, with Scott Limkermann's #86 X-car puking out smoke.
First up on the bill was another 20 lap Bandolero snooze-fest. Kaz Grala took the win over Taylor Martin and Nick Sowa. The race went caution free, thank god.
Bandolero Podium 1. Kaz Grala (3) 2. Taylor Martin (20) 3. Nick Sowa (10)
Next up were the full-bodied terrors known as the Super-X cars, and they put on an absolute thrill show throughout their 20 lap feature. It took them a few tries to get a start, but when they did, they tried their best to fit five cars across the Speedbowl's famed tarmac. Note I said tried, as it all went sour for quite a few competitors, including the #42 of Al Potter, who pancaked the right side of his car on the turn three wall before coming to rest in the T3/4 infield grass.
This brought out the red flag to clean up the mess, and also to check on the condition of Al, as he hit that wall a ton. All parties involved were okay, and the flag was lifted, we resumed under yellow conditions.
When racing resumed, we were treated to some fantastic laps of door-to-door racing until the yellow was displayed again, this time for RJ Cuningham trying to knock down the T2 wall with his Monte Carlo.
Oh, I forgot to mention that after the red flag was withdrawn, The #49 of Shawn Perkins was forced to pit after it began overheating and pissing water all over the track. He returned at the green flag after the red and began carving his way through the field.
We went green once more after Cunningham's car was removed from it's precarious position on the T2 banking, and right away there appeared to be problems with Ken Downing's #75 Chevrolet, as he slowed dramatically and dropped like a rock through the field.
Some more fantastic racing was on hand once again, with four or five cars ending up in the T3/4 wall on one lap, but all escaped major damage and we stayed green. Reminded me of how the division was 4 or five years ago, where no yellow was thrown until a car was determined to be stuck and couldn't get moving. None of this "spin and park it til I get a yellow" business that seems to have spread like wildfire over the past three years.
One moment of controversy occurred with two laps to go, when the #33 of Mike Caprio turned the #62 of Taylor-Marie Moran and was subsequently put to the rear of the finishing order for avoidable contact.
The race was won by Charles Beal for the time being, with Rob Corey finishing second, and Frank Alessio third.
Two cars were DQ'd following post-race inspection, race winner Charles Beal, and fifth place finisher Shawn Perkins, for having springs that were not in the allowed tolerance for height difference. This moved Corey up to the top spot for the second consecutive week following disqualification, with Alessio being bumped up to second, and Jon Porter took home a podium finish in his first points trip to the 'Bowl in 2010.
Super-X Car Podium: 1. Rob Corey (22x) 2. Frank Alessio (09) 3. Jon Porter (38)
Following the Supers for the second week in a row were their smaller siblings, the X-Cars.
Onie Pierce checked out to a healthy lead over the fist half of the race, with plenty of dicing going on behind him. The one major yellow came out when Devin Widger spun coming out of turn two, and was T-Boned in the passenger door by the #71 of Jermey Borbeau, who had nowhere to go. The #89 of Todd Nadeau was also involved, catching the armco in the infield and sending a track working running. I checked out Widger's car(or should we call it a tank after the past two weeks) after the race, and the damage is extensive. The entire right side doorcage(that's a technical term, by the way) was caved in by about a foot or so.
Another development on the track was the mechanical troubles that befell last weeks winner, Patrick Williams. The car came to a grinding halt in Turn 4, brining out the yellow. He went into the pits to get repairs, while the race went back green. However, Widger's scuffle occurred the same lap, and since no laps were completed, Williams was back on the track without going down a lap.
However, before going back green for the Widger incident, Williams' car died again, this time in T2. He was given a push to the infield where he remained for the rest of the race.
This set up an entertaining final few laps, with Onie brining the field to green, the #80 of Dan Madore to his right, the #53 of Glen Thomas Jr behind him, and the #34 of Dan D'Addario next to Glen. Glen got the best restart of the four, pulling even to Onie going into T1, however the #88 of Wayne Shifflett was spun going into T1 and got stuck, negating Thomas' restart and they all had to do it again.
Glen once more got the jump and had cleared Onie by T3, however he was immediately faced with D'Addario on his rear bumper. They battled for the top spot over the final few laps, with Thomas' #53 taking the checkers, followed by D'Addario, and the #5 of Rich Hearn, in his first appearance at the 'Bowl in 2010.
X Car Podium: 1. Glen Thomas Jr. (53) 2. Dan D'Addario (34) 3. Rich Hearn (5)
Getting on my soapbox again: They need to end the 'wheels stickin out real far' thing in the X Cars. Last week we saw what happens when a car get caught up in a situation with poked wheels when Devin Widger went for his flight via the rear wheels of Jeremy Violette's #3 car(who was involved in a hard wreck this week, glad he's okay.), who's car this week sported wheels and tires that stayed within the fenders. However, anyone that saw the #2 of Gary Stone would see an even more extreme case of poke. That's just FAR too dangerous, I said the same thing opening weekend when he showed up with that stupid wheel/tire combo. Front wheel drive cars have very high offset wheels. You can't stick a set of wheels on a FWD car that are designed for a RWD car without ridiculous amounts of poke. It's dangerous, and needs to be stopped immediately.
The penultimate event of the night was a 20 lap INEX Legends feature. Not much really needs to be said except for the fact that Tony Flannery won his 4th consecutive Wednesday Night feature, and his 6th consecutive INEX Legends feature including the Saturday night shows.
We were put under red flag during the Legends event for Joe Campbell, who needed to be taken by ambulance to the nearest medical center for an evaluation, as he was complaining of back pain. During the red flag period, one member from each Legends crew was allowed to go out onto the track to supply their driver with a cold drink, and the drivers were allowed to step out of their cars for a 5 minute intermission, due to the scorching heat.
INEX Legends Car podium: 1. Anthony Flannery (25) 2. Alessandro Vitelli (21) 3. Gio Giarratana (96)
Final event of the night was a 5 lap WoW Super-X race. It was won by Kathy Civardi.
Congrats to all the winners on 5/26; Kaz Grala, Rob Corey, Glen Thomas Jr, Tony Flannery, and Kathy Civardi. Hope to see everyone next week!
