Waterford Speedbowl Wild n Wacky Wednesday 7/20 Results
Garbo wins second straight Legends feature; Forte victorious in Bandoleros
Alessio takes checkered flag in Super X action; Daddario in X-Cars
Waterford, CT (July 20, 2011) Waterford Speedbowl was in action
Wednesday for another round of Wild n Wacky racing on a perfect summer
evening. Taking down victories included Dave Garbo Jr. of Stonington, who
won his second consecutive Legends Cars feature, Rachel Forte of Douglas,
MA won her second Bandolero feature on the season in impressive fashion,
Frank Alessio of Colchester returned to Victory Lane in the Super X-Cars
and Dan Daddario of Columbia took the checkered flag in the X-Cars.
Other winners on the night were Bill Reiman of Southington who won the
Wacky Toll Booth race and Don Macrino of New London was fastest in the
Vintage Midget Racing exhibition.
The 20-lap Legends Cars feature was interrupted for a multi-car caution
period on lap-2 which collected the likes of Jason Palmer, Dennis Pantani
and Dan Butler. Also involved in the skirmish were Dana Dimatteo and
Garbo, who both were able to continue on with minimal damage. Following
the restart the competition settled in with Angelo Belsito leading the
field. Racing prevailed through lap-7 when caution waved again for Carl
Blandina who spun in turn two.
Belsito and Joe Mucciacciaro lined up on the front row for the restart
with Garbo positioned third in line. Belsito got a good restart to take
the lead, but Garbo got a great restart from third position to immediately
take over second position by turn one. Garbo wasted no time powering under
Belsito in a challenge for the lead down the back chute. As they raced
back to the stripe on lap-8, Garbo was scored as the new leader.
The remainder of the race remained under the green flag and the field was
able to battle for position behind the leader. Garbo was able to pull out
to a half straightaway lead during that time. Giovanni Giarratana moved
into to second position with Dana Dimatteo rallying from his early race
trouble to come up to third place. The field finished in that order with
nobody able to catch Garbo, who went on to his second consecutive win and
third on the season. Behind the top three, Belsito and Ed Field rounded
out the top-five.
Forte took the lead on lap-4 of a caution free Bandolero feature, going on
to win the 20-lapper by five lengths. The young driver took the lead from
Jordan Lamothe with an inside maneuver through turns one and two. Behind
Forte, Lamothe led a pack of cars including previous race winners Ken
Morin Jr. and Joey Ternullo, also the division points leader. Further
back Corey Dimatteo led a pack of cars which included Daniel Stolte and
Taylor Martin, all event winners on the year as well.
By halfway Fortes lead was consistent at five lengths. Stolte began
making his way through the field, emerging in fifth and chasing down the
lead pack. He was on the move, advancing by Ternullo and looking to take
third position from Morin as the leaders hit lapped traffic in the final
laps.
The leaders cleared the tail of the field without any altercation, and
Forte went on to her second win of the season. Lamothe finished second
while Stolte rallied inside Morin for third on the final lap. Morin and
Ternullo completed the top-five finishers.
The 20-lap Super X-Car was dominated by Alessio. The caution-free feature
was completed quickly with Alessio jumping out to the race lead at the
drop of the green flag. He shot out to an early advantage that reached a
half straightaway over the competition. Mark Boisvert held second over
Dan Moon, but a hard-charging Mike Maskell moved by both and into second
by lap-5. Maskell, the division points leader, then focused on chasing
down Alessio.
Peter Pollard stormed through the field after Maskell and race outside of
Moon first, then Boisvert, to take over third position on lap-8. Pollard
was tracking Maskell for second position, meanwhile Maskell was slowly
cutting into Alessios lead at the front of the field.
Laps clicked off and without a caution period, Alessios lead was enough
to hold on. He took his third win on the season, ending a recent slump.
Behind Alessio the top-five finishers were Maskell, Pollard, John Yagmin
and Moon.
In X-Car action a large field of cars found trouble on the opening lap in
turn four, keeping the race from completing a lap. On the second attempt
to start the race, Todd Nadeau moved to the race lead over a pack of three
and four-wide battles behind. While Nadeau distanced himself from the
competition in his mirror, Christopher Ivory, Daddario and Jeremy
Bourbeau all heated up in the outside lane as they marched through the
heavy traffic. Kim Bickford spun on lap-4 to return the race to the
yellow flag and bunch up the field once again.
Following the restart, Daddario was already in a position on the track to
take over the race lead. He raced outside Nadeau and came to the stripe
in the lead on lap-5. Behind Daddario, a three-wide battle for second
broke out between points leader Randy Johnston, Nadeau and Bourbeau.
Johnston used the inside lane to take the spot but was already a half
straightaway behind Daddario by the time they reached lap-7.
The green flag remained out the rest of the way with heavy lapped traffic
coming in to play, keeping the leaders on top of the wheel. Everyone kept
their cars pointed in the right direction as the field spread out around
the Speedbowls three eighths mile surface. Daddario was able to
increase his lead through the action, going on to his third win on the
season in convincing fashion. Behind him, Johnston took second well ahead
of Bourbeau who claimed third. Past champion Brad Voglesong came on strong
late to take fourth position and Scott Limkemann finished fifth.
Bill Reiman of Southington won another Wacky Race, his second on the year.
He beat out a rowdy crowd in the Toll Booth race for the Super X-Cars.
