Wild ‘n Wacky Wednesday reaching home stretch amidst intense point battles Waterford, CT (July 26, 2010) – Points are getting to be a premium for competitors at the Speedbowl’s popular mid-week Wild ‘n Wacky Wednesday Series. Just six scheduled events remain to determine the 2010 championships with Speedbowl history and some incredibly tight point battles on the line.
The weekly battles of the full-sized Super X Car division never disappoint, and neither has their championship battle. Second generation and second year racer Michael Caprio of New Haven currently holds down the top spot, but the point lead has literally been a revolving door among several competitors. South Windsor’s Rob Corey sits just 9-points back, Charles Beal of Ledyard is 14-points behind, and Mike Maskell III of Quaker Hill has quietly positioned himself just 35-points back. All are realistic contenders at this point, with Maskell the only yet to find Victory Lane. Colchester’s Frank Alessio is the division’s most recent winner and is fifth in the standings at 66 points back, putting him in the hunt but likely needs the aid of misfortune by the others.
The four-cylinder X-Cars have staged some incredible 20-lap races this year that have gone down to the wire and the championship battle looks to shape up similarly. Groton’s Glen Thomas Jr. may be the hottest driver in the division and has just overtaken the points lead from Columbia teenager Dan D’addario by a slim 7-point advantage. Second-year competitor Devin Widger of Plainville has been impressive this season and sits third in the chase just 16-points back. Veteran racer and past champion Brad Voglesong of Middletown started slowly but has come on strong late to be only 19-points behind Thomas in fourth. Randy Johnston of Westerly, Mike Trask of Plainfield and Wayne Shifflett of Preston are all within striking distance as well.
Anthony Flannery of East Hampton rewrote record books already this year by recording 13 consecutive wins in the Legends Cars division, including the first seven Wednesday events which was also a track record for number of consecutive wins to start a season. After just turning sixteen years-old, that impressive streak helped push Flannery out to a commanding 84-point cushion over his closest competitor, second-year driver Dana Dimatteo of Farmington. The Legends Cars have seen numerous young chauffeurs improve their talents week by week in 2010. Veterans Ed Field of Deep River, Carl Blandina of Milford and Dennis Pantani of Branford are also top-five in the standings. All have their work cut out to catch Flannery.
Continuing the youth movement, the Bandolero division has grown in size and in excitement from a year ago when they were first introduced. Featuring the majority of its racers anywhere from 10 to 14 years-old, Taylor Martin of New Hampshire has emerged as the queen of the class. She has captured multiple wins to race out to a 97-point lead over the competition with her goals set on becoming the first ever female track champion in the Speedbowl’s 60-year history. Several competitors have taken down the checkered flag in 2010 as the division continues to come into its own.
The X-Modified division also appears headed for a tight finish, with the top-five drivers separated by 66 points. Bubby Brouwer of Waterford leads the way and has looked to be the dominant car, but his lead is just 12 over Paul French of Andover. Second generation driver Rick Ceravolo of Groton joined the division this year and has raced well, only 22-points off Brouwer’s pace. Teenager Brenden Shea of Mystic and Rob Gallaer of Sherman round out the five.
These point battles will all unfold over August every Wednesday night. Admission is the biggest value in racing with all youth age 14 and under free. Adults are just $7.00 and parking is free at the Speedbowl. Gates open at 5:30pm with racing beginning at 7:00pm each week.
