I see Woody got the win last night after Rocco failed tech. Well all I can say is ever since the bowl told him not to bring his car back with a certain type of head on his car has been just average at best. But the best part is even when they do catch him they don't have the stones to DQ him just a "don't come back with it" rock on Thompson!

The way I see it, is cheating is doing something that is deliberately against the rules, to gain an unfair or extra advantage. There was nothing in the rules that said you couldn't have a heat shield under the intake. The correct ruling should have been for Thompson officials to evaluate wether they thought it would be an advantage and wether or not they would allow it in the future. If upon review, they didn't want to allow it, they say to Kieth, "we will adress this issue in writing in the future rule book, but for now, we are not allowing it any more", then sent him on his way. No DQ. Same as they did when people were caught changing the firing orders on the engines( a huge horsepower advantage). Their were no DQ's, but they made those teams change the motors, then made an addendum to the rulebook, which was fully incorporated the next season.

Steve, this is the rule:

INTAKE MANIFOLD: EDELBROCK PERFORMER RPM SERIES ARE THE ONLY INTAKES ALLOWED. THE INTAKE MUST REMAIN AS MANUFACTURED “STOCK OUT OF THE BOX”. MANIFOLDS MUST REMAIN UNALTERED, INCLUDING BOLT HOLES. PAINTING OR COATING OF THE INTAKE IS NOT ALLOWED. ONLY CURRENT DESIGNED INTAKES ALLOWED. OLDER INTAKES WITH CURRENT PART NUMBERS ARE NOT ALLOWED. APPROVED PART NUMBERS ARE; CHEVROLET 7101, FORD 7181, CHRYSLER 7176. TRACK SUPPLIED INTAKE MUST FIT YOUR ENGINE.

Not sure of all the details but if the intake was drilled/tapped to allow the heat shield to be attached to the bottom of it it's technically illegal.

Yes Warren, I would agree. If he drilled holes to mount the shield, then it is an altered part. The DQ would then be the right call.
